hi im 19 and ive been in the marine corps for 15 months now and ive been training in weights for about 9 months now and ive gotten good gains in all of my lifts but im having trouble losing body fat. I run more than 15 miles a week and try not to go over 24 miles a week. I guess I just don't understand y I can't cut the body fat. its hard to work on dieting because I have to eat at the chow hall and its hard to pick what u eat when its already cooked for u but I do stay away from the fatty foods. any help would b much appriciated thanks

Hey
Welcome To The Forums
well i see your problem, its good you are weight lifting, i guess you should consider adding more cardio, and see how that goes. try to play more sports you love (etc soccer, football) or try to go from some morning walks and late night jogs
hopefully this helps you loose the bodyfat so your muscles begin to pop out under the fat!
goodluck

welcome ,
well first off thanks for serving our country!! now from almost everyone i have heard from that are in the military, this is a very common problem, especially the diet part, a large part of the problem with the body fat is going to be your diet, which is not geared to be a fat cutting diet if i`m not mistaken, i believe the military diets are designed to give you the most calories per meal within a day, if you have access to a store where you can buy your own foods, canned chicken , canned tuna, salmon, and if you could some whey protein/ and some casein protein powder would help big time for you to get more protein for the day and allow you to also get in 5 meals a day if that is possible,
also buy some whole wheat bread/ whole wheat crackers/ what ever you can get your hands on that will be whole wheat or whole grain, uncooked oatmeal or even some granola would be helpful for some carbs,,
so if you could go this route here is what i think would help out in a daily diet plan with just the foods and protein powder
start you day off with your normal breakfast which should have a good protein source/ eggs would be ideal if you could have them with out the yolks if not look if they have any hard boiled eggs and remove the yolks your self,
also you want some complex carbs in your morning meal, oat meal would be ideal here,,
now provided you can do this, here is a basic run down on how i would consume the above meals,,
1) breakfast
eggs and oatmeal
2)1 can tuna
2 slices of whole wheat bread and mayo or miracle whip.. actually how ever you like to mix your tuna up
3)1 can of chicken
your choices are what ever your in the mood for / whole wheat cracker/ or whole wheat bread again,, if you could find some cooked brown rice that would be ideal, but not sure if thats even possible where you are at ??
4) do you workout??? if so you could do this here .. or where ever in the day it its in,
but you want to eat a good protein and a complex carb meal 1 hour before working out
5) post workout drink, here is where i would use the whey protein and if you could get some simple carbs, i suppose you dont have access to dextrose , so if thats the case, you could go with some fruit and white bread...
examples of good fruits for simple carbs higher in glucose over fructose..
Pineapple (1 cup diced) 13 7 6
Honeydew melon (1 wedge) 13 7 6
Orange (1 medium) 12 6 6
Banana (1 medium) 18 9 9
Blueberries (1 cup) 14 7 7
Nectarine (1 medium) 10 5 5
Kiwi fruit (2 medium) 12 6 6
POSTWORKOUT
These fruits provide more glucose than fructose for restocking muscle
glycogen and enhancing muscle growth. (The last five fruits from the
morning fruit category are also decent choices postworkout, for their
ability to fill glycogen stores.) Eat one or two servings along with
white bread, baked potatoes or a carb drink.
6)1 hour after your postwork out drink you want to eat a meal
a good protein source/ if the mess hall has a good meal of like chicken breast or any fish that would be good
along with some veggies and complex carbs/ again brown rice or any whole grain or whole wheat sources
7) bedtime shake of just casein protein powder, now if you could get your hands on some cottage cheese that would be just as good as the casein protein, you want a slow digesting protein source while your sleeping to supply the body with nutrients while you sleep..
i know this looks like a lot but really the meals are small and compact enough to carry and eat on the go, that should make a large difference getting in a good diet of 5-6 meals rather than 3 meals that are less structured.

Hey I read your profile and read that you like to grapple. I've trained some Jiu Jitsu at a school near me. I have been doing it on and off because of school and work but I try to train when I get the chance. Its fun and no wonder you like it. Do you train with a Gi or is it mostly no Gi base grappling???

I do a lot of no gi but im focusing on my muy thai a lot right now cuz when I get out of the marine corps I wanna fight and my ground game is my strong point cuz I wrestled a lot in school so Im gonna focus on my stand up game

I am pretty much the opposite. I trained the stand up game first studied different styles of striking and finally work my way up to grappling. Both of them are very beneficial, I have done some tournaments but nothing like MMA fighting not yet at least. For me the ultimate test would be to put my skills inside the cage. It would be very intense and live !

ya I mean I wanna fight when I get out but I also do that kinda training to train for combat ya know. being in shape for sports is an entirely different world than being in shape for combat

yeah you are 100 percent correct. There is a big difference in training for the both. I like to keep the same mind frame whether its for real life combat or sports fighting.

ya I thought I was in good shape cuz I could run 3 miles in 19 minutes then I did my 1st combat conditioning and I was smoked within 5 minutes of a 30 minute workout lol ever since then ive completly changed the way I train my body

Yup it is valuable to understand what exercise strengthen your body for the sport or combat training you are doing. If you are going for 3 rounds 5 minutes each round exhibition match, I would consider heavy cardio and weight training. Heavy bags and drills.
You will do great in a cage fight, just keep training the things that will benefit you and keep up the good work.
